INFORMATION: PROCEDURES
At DigiFor all procedures and guidelines for the collection and handling of data are based on the four guiding principles of the current version of the Good Practice Guide for Computer-Based Electronic Evidence produced by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO). These principles are:

Principle 1: No action taken by law enforcement agencies or their agents should change data held on a computer or storage media which may subsequently be relied upon in court.

Principle 2: In exceptional circumstances, where a person finds it necessary to access original data held on a computer or on storage media, that person must be competent to do so and be able to give evidence explaining the relevance and the implications of their actions.

Principle 3: An audit trail or other record of all processes applied to computer based electronic evidence should be created and preserved. An independent third party should be able to examine those processes and achieve the same result.

Principle 4: The person in charge of the investigation (the case officer) has overall responsibility for ensuring that the law and these principles are adhered to.
Closely adhering to these guidelines, DigiFor procedures ensure that:
The data will be collected in a non-invasive manner.
The data will not be modified, added to or removed during the collection, investigation or storage of the data.
The data will be stored on read only media in a secure environment.
The data will be examined and investigated in a secure environment.
The data will be subject to a formal audit trail from collection through investigation to final storage. The data will be signed over to a responsible individual or stored in a secure environment.
The investigative processes will be documented and included in any final reports.
The final report will be written in a straightforward manner with technical concepts explained in an easy-to-understand and comprehensive manner.
